Wind Roundabout, Fort Worth, Texas, USA

Making the wind visible

The kinetic scultpure by the artist Ned Kahn makes an artistic intervention at a public rundabout.

The wind roundabout is more than 9 metres high and 9 metres in diameter. The ‘veil’ of stainless steel ropes and hundreds of aluminium rectangles is borne by a stainless steel structure. The Windwave rectangles move in the wind and reflect both the sunlight and the lights of cars passing by. This visualises the air flow over the roundabout and through the supporting structure.

The structure was commissioned by the city of Fort Worth, known for its passing breezes and strong winds.
