Jakob builds suspension bridge in Disentis: Update

Another bridge construction project with which we are able to demonstrate our expertise in rope and lightweight structures to small and large spans.

(November 2024)

Graubünden's longest suspension bridge has been open since Saturday (November 16, 2024) and one of our heartfelt projects is now accessible. Congratulations to all the initiators and partners who made this project possible.

We are very pleased with the positive response and the great public interest in this bridge. Our special thanks go to the LaPendenta association and our ARGE partners – PFEIFER Structures and Von Rotz & Wiedemar AG – for the excellent collaboration.

(October 2024)

End of October the engineers carried out a special load test on the suspension bridge in Disentis. The structure was loaded with around 20 tons.

Firefighters of Pumpiers Sursassiala filled 35 containers on the suspension bridge with water. Each box contained up to 530 liters. The engineers had previously attached sensors to several points on the bridge. Various load cases and their effects on the structure were then measured.

«The measured data for static behavior were then compared with the theoretically calculated values. We are satisfied with the load test and an initial evaluation shows that the theoretical values can be verified», explained Fabian Graber, Head of Technology, Jakob Rope Systems.

Swiss television on site: SRF Schweiz Aktuell and RTR Radiotelevisiun Svizra Rumantscha and TV Südostschweiz reported on the bridge test.

(October 2024)

The assembly of the suspension bridge is progressing rapidly in summer 2024. In September 2024, the deck structure is mounted on the main load-bearing ropes. The bracing ropes and secondary ropes are installed.

In September 2024, RTR Radiotelevisiun Svizra Rumantscha reported on the construction site and the progress of the bridge construction project.

The stainless steel Webnet is installed at the beginning of October 2024. This gives the suspension bridge in Disentis its last essential load-bearing element and its railing filling for the necessary safety and maximum transparency when crossing the bridge.

Bridge structure: 4 load-bearing ropes (Ø 45 mm, VVS) below the walking level, 2 load-bearing ropes (Ø 45 mm, VVS) at handrail level
Bracing structure: 2 ropes (Ø 30,9 mm, OSS), coupling ropes Ø 12 – 19 mm
Railing infill: Webnet, 2 mm rope diameter, 60 mm mesh width, vertical meshes

(June 2024)

It has been clear since August 2023: the suspension bridge in Disentis will be built. The project has been granted planning permission and the financing has also been secured.

Construction work on the foundations on both sides of the valley began in March 2024. This work is currently ongoing. Our Jakob Engineering team is in contact with those responsible on site to ensure a good starting position for the subsequent bridge installation.

Assembly of the suspension bridge will begin at the end of August 2024. The work will be carried out by Von Rotz & Wiedemar. The bridge construction should be completed by November 2024 - according to the current planning of the responsible client.

Our Jakob Engineering team is currently preparing the basis for the steel construction workshop plans (Huser Stahlbau, Kerns). The planning for the production of the components supplied by us is also currently being prepared.

(November 2022)

Graubünden's longest suspension bridge will soon be built at Disentis/Mustér. With a length of almost 300 meters and a ground distance of 100 meters, the suspension bridge will create a spectacular footpath from Mumpé Medel to Disentis/Mustér across the deep, narrow Rhine gorge here. From a tourist point of view, the suspension bridge will then connect two waypoints of the historic track over the Lukmanierpass.

The ARGE Jakob Rope Systems / Pfeifer / Von Rotz & Wiedemar AG has been awarded the contract for the complete solution of this suspension bridge. The offer includes planning, fabrication and assembly. For Jakob Rope Systems it is another bridge construction project with which we can prove our competence for rope and lightweight structures to small and large spans.

Jakob Rope Systems designed the construction of the suspension bridge and will carry out the construction planning. The construction will fit filigree into the landscape. The bridge structure is formed by six suspension ropes (Ø 45 mm) below the walkway and two suspension ropes at handrail level. Two ropes (Ø 26 mm, Forte) are used for bracing. A bracing structure consisting of stainless steel ropes and connections reduces unwanted swaying during use, absorbs forces in the event of wind action and prevents major deformations.

The steel frame construction of the bridge girder is suspended from the supporting ropes. Our Webnet with a height of 1.30 meters provides the necessary fall protection as a lateral railing infill and additionally carries loads.

We are very much looking forward to working with the «la pendenta» association.
