Courtyard greening in Wil
Initial situation and concept
The “Perronimo” project in Wil is a modern residential and commercial complex featuring three green courtyards. Since the ground of all courtyards is fully occupied, the greening is achieved using planters from which climbing plants grow up along specially designed rope structures.
Jakob Rope Systems was responsible for the design, planning, fabrication, and installation of the rope structures according to the specifications of architects Staufer Hasler and Mettler Landschaftsarchitektur. The Jakob Rope Systems engineering team developed a durable suspension rope system that reliably accommodates the structural requirements as well as the subsequent loads of the greenery. The engineering took into account factors such as prestressing forces, the dead weight of the ropes, and plant, wind, and snow loads.
Construction and implementation
The stainless-steel suspension rope structures form the foundation for a permanently functional courtyard greening. As the climbing plants grow, they create attractive green outdoor spaces that improve the microclimate, enhance the quality of the environment, and make a valuable contribution to climate-resilient urban development.
Jakob Rope Systems implemented a comprehensive solution for the project, ranging from engineering and design to manufacturing and installation. The solution utilizes horizontal suspension ropes with diameters of 16 and 12 millimeters, fitted with Forte turnbuckles and clevises. Custom-made brackets serve as anchor points for the horizontal ropes.
The solution is complemented by vertical ropes with a diameter of 8 millimeters. They are equipped with swaged eye ends at the top and a Classic turnbuckle and a loop at the bottom, providing optimal conditions for healthy and sustained plant growth.
