Large aviaries at Leipzig Zoo
Initial situation and concept
The new bird habitats at Leipzig Zoo have created modern, nature-inspired environments that provide a connection between state-of-the-art animal care and an extraordinary visitor experience. In two large, walk-through aviaries, guests can observe exotic bird species up close and with virtually no visible barriers.
The “Loriversum”, measuring approximately 540 square meters and standing 10 meters high, offers Southeast and East Asian bird species plenty of space to move freely. The “Amazonien” aviary, of comparable height, spans approximately 830 square meters and creates a spacious flight area for large parrots and other South American bird species.
Construction and implementation
The Webnet stainless steel net plays a central role in the construction of these facilities. Its delicate materiality blends discreetly into the zoo environment and allows for virtually unobstructed views into the aviaries. At the same time, the net ensures the necessary load-bearing capacity and safety for enclosing the expansive flight areas.
Thanks to its flexibility, Webnet can be optimally adapted to the complex geometry of the facilities. In combination with the steel structure and the suspension rope system, a lightweight and high-performance overall structure is created that allows for spacious flight areas while simultaneously meeting stringent structural and safety requirements.
The result is a transparent and discrete architecture in which the structure recedes visually into the background, placing the animals and their habitats at the center of attention.
