Pfannenstiel Tower newly secured with Webnet

The Pfannenstiel Tower near Zurich was renovated and equipped with the stainless steel Webnet from Jakob Rope Systems. The mesh structure reliably protects visitors without compromising the historic architecture.

The Pfannenstiel Tower near Zurich shines in new splendor: The historic observation tower underwent extensive renovation – rust spots were removed, riveted and bolted connections were renewed, and the overall structural stability was improved. Structural measures were also implemented to increase safety for visitors.

Jakob Rope Systems was commissioned to design, manufacture and install the Webnet stainless steel mesh on site at the Pfannenstiel Tower for the structural safety elements.

Initial situation and monument preservation:

The tower looks back on an eventful history: Originally built in 1893 on the Bachtel near Hinwil, it was demolished in 1985. All components were carefully dismantled, stored and restored. The Pfannenstiel Tower has stood at its current location on the Pfannenstiel near Egg since 1992.

The refurbishment was carried out in close coordination with the conservation authorities. All structural interventions are planned to be reversible - including the installation of the Webnet. A black burnished mesh version was used so as not to alter the historical color scheme. The sleeve-free mesh structure blends in with the appearance of the tower.

Planning and implementation:

Based on the metal construction work by Koller Metallbautechnik, Jakob Rope Systems planned and installed the delicate stainless steel nets. The Webnet spans all levels of the ascent as a protective cover, mounted on pre-installed square tubes. Each piece of netting is fitted precisely into a surrounding frame - all the way up to the viewing platform at a height of 33 meters. Precise net manufacturing at the factory and professional on-site installation ensure maximum safety and longevity.
