Suspension bridge Giswil

The Steibrücke bridge was rebuilt as a suspension bridge. Jakob Rope Systems supplied suspension ropes and Webnet stainless steel nets, which serve as load-bearing structure, railing and safety element. The bridge's lightweight stainless steel construction is optimally designed for the conditions of the Altibach gorge.

Initial situation and concept

The Steibi bridge over the Altibach stream is an important link on the hiking trail between Zopfwald and the Sacrament Chapel in Giswil (Obwalden). In the summer of 2024, the metal bridge was completely destroyed in a severe storm.

Various bridge types were considered for the reconstruction. In the end, a suspension bridge was chosen – a design that is particularly suitable for the narrow Altibach gorge. The bridge's abutments are located outside the flood and danger zone. The entire structure is located higher above the course of the stream. This significantly reduces the risk of blockages and damage caused by floating debris.

Von Rotz Seilbahnen AG was commissioned with the planning and construction of the new suspension bridge. Jakob Rope Systems measured and supplied the suspension ropes and the Webnet stainless steel net for the project.

Construction and implementation

The structure of the suspension bridge consists of two suspension ropes and two bracing ropes, which are integrated into the walkway. The abutments are discreetly placed in the winding landscape of the Altibach stream. The entire construction connects all the bridge elements directly to the static structure: the Webnet stainless steel net simultaneously assumes the function of an active load-bearing element, railing and reliable fall protection.

The result is a lightweight, resource-saving construction that fits into the rugged gorge like a fine spider's web. For additional efficiency and stability, the net structure of the Webnet has been variably planned and optimized.

The stainless steel construction elements of the bridge guarantee a high degree of robustness and a long service life, even in the permanently damp and shady conditions of the gorge.
